Leadership Traits or Processes

Leadership capabilities are viewed as some of the most desirable traits in the business world. Countless how-to guides, seminars and workshops have been created to identify the traits and processes of successful leaders. While there is no sure-fire method to becoming a leader, most leaders do exhibit certain patterns of behavior in and outside the workplace.


  1. Successful leaders are usually guided by a clearly defined vision and purpose. They believe that they can improve things and make a difference in their environment. An ability to envision the future, based on their own ideals or concept of what their company can become, is essential for a leader. Leaders use these ideals to get other people excited about the possibilities of the future. People are drawn to the hope leaders inspire.

Status Quo

  1. Leaders are not afraid to challenge the status quo. In keeping with the ideal that change leading to improvement is attainable, leaders seek out new opportunities to implement this concept whenever possible. They experiment, innovate and take risks in the workplace, often taking on challenging projects or pursuing ones of their own. A leader is not afraid to fail, as failure provides a valuable opportunity to grow and learn from previous mistakes.

Respect and Trust

  1. Because people are drawn to leaders, leaders are often in the position of being able to foster collaboration between colleagues and even departments. Leaders achieve this by actively involving others and encouraging team-building in a manner that fosters mutual respect. It is this mutual respect that leads co-workers to seek out the consultation of the leader, and enables projects to be completed in a timely manner. This mutual respect inspires trust in both others and the leader.


  1. Leaders are typically aware of their status as a leader. Because of this, they are not necessarily focused on receiving personal accolades, since they know other opportunities for personal recognition will present themselves in the future. This allows leaders to encourage and recognize the contributions of others, and share in the success of others in the workplace. A good leader makes others feel like they are equally capable and worthy of praise.
