Where on the Hard Drive Are Internet Explorer Favorites Saved?
When you create favorites in Internet Explorer, the browser saves them in the Favorites folder in your Windows user directory. If someone else uses the computer with a different Windows login name, Internet Explorer creates a separate Favorites folder in his own user directory.
Favorite Folder Locations
-
The full path to the Favorites folder in later versions of Windows is "C:\Users(username)\Favorites\". If the hard drive is configured for Windows XP, the favorites are at "C:\Documents and Settings(username)\Favorites\". Replace "(username)" with the name you use to log in to Windows. You can transfer your bookmarks to another user profile, or even to another computer, by copying the contents of this folder to the same folder in a different user profile.
Bookmark Backup File
-
As an alternative to copying your entire Favorites folder, you can also export your favorites to a backup file, but this works only if you can run Internet Explorer from the drive containing the favorites. When you export the favorites, Internet Explorer saves them by default to a "bookmark.htm" file in the "C:\Users(username)\Documents\" directory. In Windows XP, the backup file is saved in the C:\Documents and Settings\username)\My Documents\" directory. You can import this backup file into Internet Explorer on another computer, or even into another browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera.
